Wazapp brings WhatsApp to Nokia N9

by on Oct.16, 2012, under N9, Nokia

Wazapp for N9The long waiting has an end! After months of ambitious development, Tarek Galal has published today a first public beta (v.0.1.6) version of the ported messaging client.
The beta version contains basic features like single conversations (limited group-chats), chat log, contact synchronization, account manager and notifications.

The main aim is to have a fully functional single conversations feature. You might think it’s not much, but by fully functional I mean having those single conversation built on top of an almost complete core of the app. So we’d have notifications, settings interface, chat logging, connection monitoring, delivery statuses, presence updates, contacts management and others. – Tarek Galal
Wazapp is WhatsApp for Nokia N9
How does Wazapp work?
The original WhatsApp is a cross-platform instant messaging application available for several smartphone platforms. Contacts which use the same messenger can be imported by using the “Sync Contacts” button. Afterwards it is possible to send and receive messages similar to SMS, using your mobile data plan (what is a lot cheaper).
Wazapp keeps running minimized in the background when you close the application. Therefore you won’t miss new messages which are shown with a notification. To completely stop Wazapp (including background activities) you can click “Quit” within the application.
How to install Wazapp?
1. Download and install the latest Wazapp beta from wazapp.im (you don’t know how to install 3rd party software? Please read more here
2. Start Wazapp and enter registration information, country code (e.g +41) and your phone number without a 0 (e.g  0 791234567)

3. Wait to receive registration number via SMS. You may have to enter it manually or use one of the offered methods. If you get an error like “fail-too-recent::39” it means that you have to wait 39 minutes until you can try to register again. Be patient, if it doesn’t work you should try again later.
4. Choose an user name and you are ready to “Wazapp”! Don’t forget to sync your contact list.
What will be added in the future?
Emoji for WazappFuture versions of Wazapp will include fully functional group chats, sending and receiving media files, use Emoji smiley and a possibility to block/unblock contacts.
What are the limits of this version?
Group chats are only supported partially. If you are already in an active conversation group, you can receive and send messages. But it is not yet possible to create or join a group conversation.

Media files can’t be sent or received. In case a contact sends you a media file (picture, video) you won’t receive any message or notification with Wazapp.

Smileys (Emojis) cannot be received. The current version of Wazapp will show them as little rectangles.

If you find any bugs or want to follow the discussion about Wazapp, please have a look at talk.maemo.org.
How to update my Wazapp version?
Shortly after the initial release of Wazapp a new version got published on the website. There won’t be any update notification at this moment. You need to push the “Quit” button within the application (IMPORTANT) and next can re-install/download the new version from wazapp.im. To find out what version you have installed, click “About” and your version number is shown (e.g Version 0.1.8)
Use the “Quit” button is important because otherwise background services won’t and the update can’t be installed properly.

Set up Google Sync with your iOS device

by on Oct.12, 2012, under iOS, iPhone 4

Follow the steps below to setup Google Sync on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.

Requirements and Backing Up Data

  1. Google Sync is only supported on Apple iOS versions 3.0 and above. You can check your current version by going to Settings > General > About > Version. If you’re running an iOS before 3.0, upgrade to the latest iOS on Apple’s site: http://www.apple.com/ios/ before setting up Google Sync.
  2. Check your Safari cookies1 settings to see if it is set to “From Visited” or “Always”. If it’s set to “Never”, you’re more likely to be prompted to solve the CAPTCHA.
  3. Perform a sync with iTunes to ensure that Contacts and Calendars from your iOS device are backed up to your computer. Learn more about backing up your Contacts and Calendars.
  4. If your business, school, or organization uses Google Apps, your administrator will need to have Google Sync enabled before you can take advantage of this feature. Note that after you set up Google Sync, your administrator may also have additional device management capabilities (such as remote wipe or password requirements). Click to learn more or contact your administrator.

Getting Started

1. Open the Settings application on your device’s home screen.
2. Open Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
3. Press Add Account….
4. Select Microsoft Exchange. iOS 4.0+ allows multiple Exchange accounts. However, if you’re on a device that doesn’t let you add a second account, you could also use CalDAV to sync Google Calendar and IMAP to sync Gmail.

Enable Mail, Calendar, and Contacts

12. Select the Google services (Mail, Calendar, and Contacts) you want to sync. To receive and respond to meeting requests on your device, both Mail and Calendar need to be turned on, and New events needs to be enabled in your Google Calendar settings.

To enable ‘New events’, sign in to your Google Calendar using the web browser on your phone or computer. Go to Calendar Settings > Calendars > Click on the Notifications for the calendar you want to sync. Under Email check ‘New events’ (and any of the other Invitation settings you want enabled e.g. changed events, cancelled events, event responses), and click Save.

13. There are three options for keeping your contacts synced. You can keep your device’s contacts and sync just your My Contacts group, you can sync only Google Contacts and wipe your device’s contacts or you can merge your contacts via iTunes and sync only the contacts that stream with your phone.

13a. If you would like to keep your existing contacts on your device select the Keep on my iPhone (or iPad or iPod touch) option when prompted. This will also allow you to keep syncing with your computer via iTunes. If you choose to keep existing contacts, you will sync the contents of the My Contacts group.

13b.If you have all your contacts in Google and you want to start syncing them to your device and don’t want to keep the contacts on your phone, tap Delete Existing Contacts. If there are no contacts on your phone, the contents of your All Contacts group will be synced.

13c. If you have all your contacts on your device and want to import them into Google, you can synchronize your Google Contacts with iTunes. All Contacts and Calendars that you sync with iTunes will be put into the On My iPhone Contacts and Calendar groups on your phone. The iPhone currently doesn’t allow you to move Contacts or Calendar events from the On My iPhone groups to the Google Sync groups.
